Attempting Elizabeth

It’s here! National Novel Writing Month starts today!  I’m working on my Austenesque novel Attempting Elizabeth, which I am expanding from a short story I wrote last year with the same title.  My goal is to have this book out by August of next year . . . we are going to be having an Indie Jane meet up at the 2012 JASNA AGM (Jane Austen Society of North America Annual General Meeting) and I am looking forward to publishing Attempting Elizabeth before then.

Here is a synopsis!

Grad student Sophie Edmundson wished she could exchange her dull, mundane life for the excitement and romance of Regency England. Like generations of women before her, her secret desire is to be transported back to the golden age of Pride and Prejudice. Unlike those women, she actually succeeds. When she wakes up one morning and discovers she is none other than Georgiana Darcy, Sophie realizes a whole world has opened up to her. As she masters the art of leaping back and forth from her normal life into Austen’s romantic realm, she discovers that it is impossible to live in this world without becoming a player in it.

As Sophie literally fills the shoes of the various female characters, she begins to identify with them as real, flesh-and-blood women who share the common fate of living in proximity to the dashing Mr. Darcy. Finding herself discontented to settle for a lesser role, she aspires to become Elizabeth Bennet – the supreme object of Mr. Darcy’s love and admiration. But in the pursuit of her aspirations, Sophie must face the most challenging and deeply personal questions of her life – questions that will confront her no less acutely in the real world: Is she destined to play a supporting role as another receives Mr. Darcy’s affections? Can she discover a way into the lead role and the love of a lifetime? And can she fulfill her dream without losing herself along the way?

Wouldn’t it be fun to jump into your favorite literary characters?  What character would you be if you had that ability?  Elizabeth Bennet is a pretty good choice . . . I’d also love to be Mara Jade from Timothy Zahn’s Star Wars books, or maybe even Anne Shirley (more in Anne of the Island than in the first books).  What about you?

  1. I think it would be pretty exciting to jump into Meg from Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time or Matilda from Roald Dahl’s book.
